Parish as Partnership?
Personnel working in Parish Pastoral Development (PPD) assist parishes in setting up and maintaining structures which develop the parish as a partnership between all the people of the parish. Following discussions between the parish pastoral team (clergy and religious), parishioners and personnel from PPD, parishes in the diocese opt to establish either a Parish Assembly or a Parish Pastoral Council.
Either model is made up of a body of people, priests and parishioners; who have accepted their nomination by their peers, to lead and support the development of their parish as a faith community.
Delegates are nominated for a three-year term (the parish team are members by virtue of their office). At the start of each three year term, the group spends time reflecting on the parish and its needs, and preparing a program of development for the parish. We call this the Formation Programme.
Once established, the pastoral group is also supported in its work and development by PPD. The PPD Coordinators work in close collaboration with other people who provide resources in time and programmes to help in meeting the needs of the parishes. Coordinators are assigned to specific parishes.
